In the summer of 2013 the management of an industrial plant located in the Haifa bay area decided to remove and replace one of the existing old fractionating-column tower constructed in the mid-1970s by a new tower to be supported by the original reinforced concrete (RC) base, as well as to renovate its piping connection system. The new fractionating-column tower height was 36m, 3.2m base diameter and with an operation weight of nearly 230 ton-mass.
An advanced retrofit design scheme has been adopted, using four non-linear fluid viscous dampers as energy-dissipating devices with a new bracing system.
Another challenge was the design of connection between the new tower and the RC thick plate base. This was carried out by utilizing 24 post-tensioning high strength anchor rods.
The advantages of seismic retrofit using viscous dampers namely include: the relief from retrofitting the foundation system, compliance to the very tight project schedule, and construction cost savings.
